Food Technician Teaching Assistant

Pay Scale: Band A point 4 (approx. £16,190 actual)
25 hrs per week - 45.8 wks per year (1 extra paid week after 5 years of service)

We are seeking to appoint a Food Technician Teaching Assistant top rovide practical, technical and administrative support in our Food Technology Department. The successful candidate will assist teaching staff in delivering engaging, safe and effective lesson by supporting students' learning and maintaining high standards of safety and organisation.

Previous experience of working with children with special educational needs whilst not essential, is preferable.

In March 2025 Treetops School was judged by Ofsted to have maintained the standards identified at the previous inspection. The previous inspection was in February 2020, at which time Treetops was judged as Outstanding. Treetops Free School, which officially opened in September 2022, was judged Good in its first Ofsted inspection in March 2024. 

Students throughout Treetops Learning Community have complex needs varying from moderate to severe learning difficulties, which may include; speech and communication difficulties, autism and global developmental delay.

Key Responsibilities


1. Technical & Practical Support

  • Prepare, set up and clear away ingredients, equipment and resources for Food Technology lessons.
  • Provide similar preparation and support for Resistant Materials and Textiles lessons as needed.
  • Maintain, clean and store equipment safely across all areas.
  • Monitor and manage stock levels of ingredients, textiles and consumables, placing orders as required.
  • Assist in maintaining health, safety and hygiene standards in workshops, kitchens and classrooms, including COSHH and risk assessments.
  • Support the maintenance and safe use of specialist equipment (kitchen appliances, sewing machines, power tools, etc.).

2. Classroom Support (TA Role)

  • Support students during practical and theory lessons across Food, Resistant Materials and Textiles under the direction of the teacher.
  • Provide one-to-one or small group support.
  • Help maintain good behaviour and a safe working environment during lessons.
  • Assist with the preparation of teaching materials and resources, including IT-based presentations, worksheets and displays.
  • Help supervise students on trips, events or competitions related to Design & Technology.

3. Administrative Duties

  • Keep accurate records of stock, orders, and budgets for all areas supported.
  • Maintain appropriate allergen, dietary and safety information for all ingredients and materials used.
  • Support teachers with lesson preparation, coursework administration and displays.

4. Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure that all safety policies and procedures are followed by staff and students in all teaching areas.
  • Report hazards, accidents or faulty equipment promptly.
  • Conduct routine checks on equipment, tools and materials.
