Information about the School

Monkwick Junior School is proud to be part of the Sigma Trust.

Monkwick Junior School caters for pupils aged between seven and eleven from the south of Colchester. The majority of children live in the Berechurch ward although an increasing number are now coming from outside the school’s catchment area.

Our school is organised into lower and upper Key Stage 2 phases and was two forms of entry. From September 2016 we now admit three forms of entry in to Year 3 which will result in the school expanding to meet a growing cohort.

At Monkwick Junior School the aim is to instil into each child a love of learning. There should be quality and equality in all aspects of the curriculum and we aim to do this by providing a purposeful, stimulating environment in which the children can become more independent learners.

The school is committed to high standards and to achieve these, pupils are involved in planned programmes of learning, catering for a range of ability and aptitude. Pupils enter with standards that are well below the national average and with many barriers to learning. Monkwick has established an effective Pastoral Team to overcome those barriers to learning and to support families and the community.

The secure caring environment in school should allow children to feel accepted and valued as individual people and increase their feeling of self-worth. We celebrate children’s achievements in a variety of ways, encouraging them to develop their full potential. With an emphasis on sound social values, we encourage positive attitudes of behaviour towards others and help them to accept their responsibilities as part of a group.

Monkwick Junior School will embrace the values of The Sigma Trust to ensure that all students will fulfil their potential and transform life chances for all.

Safeguarding The Sigma Trust is committed to safeguarding and protecting the children and young people that we work with. As such, all posts are subject to safer recruitment process, including the disclosure of criminal records, online checks and other vetting checks. We ensure that we have a range of policies in place which promote safeguarding and safer working practice across our schools.
