Assistant Caretaker

Scale 3, point 6

21.25 hours per week

Reports to:
Site Manager/Co-Headteachers


Job Purpose
To contribute to the smooth and safe operation of the site by providing security and supervision, maintaining site equipment and facilities, and performing duties including cleaning and routine maintenance.


Duties
The postholder has a responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people and is required to act in accordance with the school's safeguarding and child protection policies at all times. This includes maintaining appropriate professional boundaries, reporting any safeguarding concerns promptly to the designated safeguarding lead, and contributing to a safe and secure learning environment.
Security and Supervision
To act as a key holder and carry out security procedures for the school buildings and grounds, including the routine and non-routine opening and locking of premises;
To respond to call-outs outside normal working hours, including incidents such as break-ins or the activation of intruder alarms;
To facilitate access to the premises and classrooms, where practicable, during adverse weather conditions or minor emergency situations (e.g. snow, minor flooding);
To deal courteously and effectively with enquiries from officers and employees of the Local Education Authority, contractors, and other visitors, and to notify relevant staff of their presence as appropriate.
Cleaning and Maintenance
To undertake cleaning duties within allocated areas, including secondary cleaning tasks as required;
To carry out work at height where appropriate safety equipment and training is provided and safe systems of work are in place, in accordance with Health and Safety requirements (e.g. use of a cherry picker in halls);
To undertake first-line repairs and maintenance within the scope of the postholder's skills and capabilities, including but not limited to:
Basic plumbing tasks, such as repairing minor leaks, replacing washers, or installing simple fittings;
Redecoration tasks where appropriate;
Repairs to fencing and site boundaries, including broken panels, stakes, or chain-link fencing.
To receive deliveries of stores, materials, and other goods and distribute them to designated locations, including the dispatch of laundry and materials as required;
To ensure that adequate stocks of cleaning materials and other supplies are maintained;
To operate and monitor the heating plant to ensure that required temperatures and hot water supplies are maintained, including the implementation of frost precaution procedures;
To ensure that all cleaning and maintenance equipment is maintained in a safe and serviceable condition and to arrange repairs where necessary;
To carry out routine security and safety checks of the school site;
To implement school-based procedures in the event of fire, flood, break-ins, accidents, or major damage.
Other Duties
To test portable electrical equipment, where appropriately trained and accredited to do so;
To assist with the supervision and training of cleaning staff in the absence of, or at the request of, the Site Manager;
To undertake lettings and associated duties in accordance with the relevant local or provincial agreements;
To prepare school buildings and grounds for out-of-school activities and events'
To assist, as required, with the completion of documentation for the requisition of stores and the reporting of repairs.
General Responsibilities
To carry out all duties in accordance with school policies and procedures, including Health and Safety and safeguarding requirements;
To undertake any other reasonable duties associated with the premises, as required from time to time, in line with established local practice and the reasonable requirements of the Co-Headteachers and Governing Body.
