We have a full-time vacancy for a peripatetic teacher who is either already a Qualified Teacher of the Deaf or an experienced teacher with substantial knowledge and interest in special educational needs, who would be willing to train as a Teacher of the Deaf. The training will be fully funded. You will join our multidisciplinary Physical & Sensory Impairment Specialist Teaching Service, working as part of a group of specialist teachers and other professionals. This post includes lone working in homes and education settings/schools.

Job Purpose

Teachers of the Deaf manage an individual caseload of deaf children/young people aged 0-25 and provide specialist teaching, advice and support to deaf children/young people, their families, schools, and settings across the Council.

With qualified teacher status and, preferably, qualified teacher of the deaf status, the successful candidate requires the ability to build strong working relationships which are collaborative in nature.

Further qualifications in British Sign Language would be welcomed.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage and maintain a caseload of deaf/hearing-impaired children and young people, giving specialist advice and support to families and staff in education settings/schools in order to ensure high quality outcomes and inclusion for all.
  • Plan and deliver specialist training to staff in settings attended by children/young people on caseload, to ensure that the educational implications of their hearing impairment/deafness is understood and effectively managed.
  • Work in close partnership with children/young people, their families, staff in education settings, audiology clinics, speech and language therapists and all local authority SEND services to ensure high quality, accurate, impartial, specialist information is used to inform decision making.
  • Participate in the development of the policies and practices of the Sensory Impairment Team to keep abreast of developments in education, SEND and deaf education/audiology.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date records, writing specialist reports to inform One Planning (including EHCPs) and specialist provision for deaf children/young people.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Educated to Qualified Teacher Status and possesses Qualified Teacher of the Deaf Status or be willing to undertake the training to become a Qualified Teacher of the Deaf (training funded by ECC).
  • Evidence of continuing professional development with expert knowledge in relevant professional area.
  • Substantial experience working with children and young people within an area of special educational needs.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with stakeholders, partners, and other agencies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a way of delivering information in a clear, concise, and easily understood manner.
