The School is passionate about developing our pupils as inquisitive and independent learners. The library, at the heart of the School, is a busy, vibrant facility that is well used by the school community, supporting both teaching and learning activities.

Background

Founded in 1629 by Samuel Harsnett, the son of a Colchester baker who went on to become Archbishop of York, Chigwell School stands on its original site with the original school building still in use. However, whilst Chigwell of today is conscious of its long-standing history, it is a forward-looking, ambitious, co-educational independent school of 930 pupils aged four to eighteen. It enjoys excellent facilities, a dedicated staff, bright and hardworking pupils, and a site of 100 acres. There is a small community of international boarders.

Chigwell is a high performing school. As well as being an academic school, Chigwell has the reputation for providing a rich and full education, with plenty of opportunities for all pupils who are enthusiastic, co-operative and able.

There are over a hundred teachers and together with the support staff, there is a friendly, mutually-supportive atmosphere. All teaching staff contribute to the extra-curricular programme.

The successful candidate should have experience of working with children of all ages and ideally with those of secondary age and of managing a library. Sound knowledge of literature for young people, enthusiasm and a passion for promoting literacy are equally important for this role.

Information about the School

Chigwell School is a leading independent foundation offering a first class education to boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 18.

We offer children a balanced education in a stable, traditional environment, but one nonetheless focused on the future. Renowned for our high academic standards, we set equal store by our wide range of extra-curricular activities, our well-developed sense of pastoral care, and the spiritual dimension to our life. Chigwell School is, above all, a community in which children can grow, for we seek to develop the whole person, so that ultimately he or she can enter the fast changing world of the 21st century with confidence and make a really positive contribution.

We work closely with parents and believe strongly in a partnership between school and home. When Chigwellians finally leave school, most have achieved academic results of which they can feel very proud and which enable them to thrive at university. Beyond that point, we want them to be eminently employable, able to work in teams, to get things done, to be resourceful, able to communicate, adaptable and always able to learn more.

We hope that the Chigwell pupils of today will make good citizens in the future, secure and confident in their own beliefs, and tolerant of others.

All appointments are subject to safer recruitment requirements to ensure the safeguarding of children and young people. All positions will involve appropriate checks and clearances.
