CONTINGENT COMMANDER: Lieutenant Huw Derrick CCF

The School

Ormiston Park officially opened as an 11-19 mixed Academy in September 2009 and moved into a 100% new build in November 2013. The Academy has a current role of 550 students and as part of the Government's Cadet Expansion Programme has established a Combined Cadet Force (Army Section) with approximately 15 cadets.

Ormiston Park Academy was in April 2017 graded Good in all respects by Ofsted. It holds both Healthy School and International School status, and in January 2017 was awarded the prestigious Diversity Mark. It has attained the AfPE quality mark with Distinction and has been accredited as a Microsoft Office Specialist Academy and Centre of Excellence.

The CCF parades after school every Tuesday during term time, between 14:50 and 16:50 hrs and takes part in other training weekends/evenings as well as attending an annual central camp, usually a few weeks before the summer holidays.

The Applicant

The applicant is likely to be an ex-Senior NCO of the regular or reserve armed services (Army & RM Sergeants and Warrant Officers, or their equivalent ranks in the Royal Navy and RAF). Applications are also invited from others who have a working knowledge of the cadet movement or experience as a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer. As this is not a full-time post the applicant is likely to be in other employment or retired but in a position to commit themselves to the training days, as detailed above. Flexibility is sought and will be offered. The ability to command and inspire young people and possession of a good sense of humour are essential.

Applicants will ideally hold a full UK driving licence.

CCF Duties

The SSI is responsible to the Principal, through the Contingent Commander, for his / her CCF duties. These include:

Administration:

The SSI is responsible for the routine administration of the Contingent under the direction of the Contingent Commander. This includes:

(a) the maintenance of stores and other essential records

(b) the arranging of authorisation for training

(c) the process of travel and expenses claims

(d) the administration of the CCF building, armoury and ammunition

(e) the regular updating of regulations and pamphlets

(f) the updating of risk assessments

(g) the use of the Westminster database, including the maintenance of cadet and staff records, and course applications.

CCF Stores:

The SSI is responsible for the management of the CCF stores, including:

(a) the organisation of uniforms, and military and adventurous training equipment

(b) the maintenance of CCF weapons

(c) the recording of clothing and stores issues and charging of cadets for losses

Military and Adventure training:

The SSI's primary duties are administrative but he/she will also be involved in the training of Army and cadets. This includes:

(a) Assisting with CCF shooting

(b) Instructing cadets on the Tuesday training period, on weekend exercises and activities such as Army Central Summer Camp and other Adventure Training Camps

(c) Advising the Contingent Commander on training requirements, and on the maintenance of high and safe standards throughout the CCF

Outline of Terms and Conditions

The appointment is made by the Principal on the recommendation of the Contingent Commander and subject to the approval of Colonel Cadets, London District.

The SSI can claim pay from the MOD for up to 51 days per annum at an army rate of pay (currently £69.86 before tax) for full days worked. Other expenses may be payable, subject to MOD regulations.

Hours

The SSI is expected to attend each Tuesday during school term time between 11.00 hrs and 19.00hrs or by other mutually agreed arrangement with the Contingent Commander.

In addition, it is expected that at least 3 weekend/overnight training days are worked each year (1 per term). Full attendance at the central Summer Camp is required and attendance at Cadet Training days will also be paid. (Total days worked will not exceed 51 days a year).

Salary

The Academy is able to offer an additional contract for a further 2 days per week during term time in order to support the success of the Contingent and for the undertaking of other duties. For example: the coordination and delivery of the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme within the Academy, the co-ordination and delivery of CVQO qualifications such as the Level 2 Diploma in Teamwork and Personal Development and/or support for the delivery of other adventurous activities and residential experiences. This would be paid on an appropriate point on Band 5 of the Thurrock support staff pay scales (£20,838 - £26,383 FTE).

Clothing

The SSI is eligible to requisition and will be expected to wear uniform, when on duty. He/she may wear an appropriate rank. The MOD policy is that A non-commissioned SSI is to wear the badge of rank which was held on discharge from the Services, provided that it is not higher than warrant officer. Regional Command may give authority for the wearing of a badge of rank higher than that held on discharge from Regular service.

Probation period

The probationary period will be one academic year, during which time the appointment may be terminated, without reason, by either party giving one month's notice.

Requirements

Confirmation of appointment is conditional on the receipt of satisfactory references, security clearance and an enhanced DBS check.

Applications

Interested parties should, in the first instance, provide a letter of application and Curriculum vitae to the Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Huw Derrick CCF, by e-mail at hderrick@ormistonpark.org.uk.

An appointment is expected to be made to start 1st September 2017 and applications will continue to be invited until the post is filled.

All appointments are subject to safer recruitment requirements to ensure the safeguarding of children and young people. All positions will involve appropriate checks and clearances.
