Assistant Caretaker Vacancy - St Luke's Church Primary School

Website: www.stlukesschool.co.uk

St Luke's is a vibrant, friendly and values‑led primary school at the heart of the Tiptree community, a short distance from the A12 and near both Chelmsford and Colchester. We are building a new Site Team to ensure our premises are safe, well‑maintained and ready for children to thrive every day. As part of this, we are advertising two roles with a view to only appoint one:

  • 37 hours per week - Site Manager (Scale 5, Band 3)
  • 30 hours per week - Assistant Caretaker (Scale 3, Band 2)

These roles work together alongside our School Business Manager to provide consistent, high‑quality site management across the school and the second role would be supported by a Part Time Site Manager. Applicants may express interest in either post.

We are looking for committed, skilled and proactive individuals who take pride in maintaining a school environment and who can contribute positively to the smooth running of our premises.

Assistant Caretaker Key Responsibilities

  • Security & Keyholding - Opening/closing the site, responding to alarm call‑outs, preventing unauthorised access, and ensuring the premises are secure at all times.
  • Cleaning & Presentation - Undertaking cleaning of allocated areas, supporting high‑level cleaning where safe systems are in place, and ensuring the school is consistently well‑presented.
  • Maintenance & Repairs - Carrying out first‑line repairs (plumbing, plastering, glazing, fencing, DIY tasks), identifying maintenance needs and supporting planned work programmes. Keeping drains, gutters, walkways and the playground clear.
  • Health & Safety - Assisting with the operation systems and checks to ensure compliance with codes of practices.
  • Support for Lettings - Preparing the site for out‑of‑hours activities and assisting with related administrative tasks.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience in cleaning and first‑line maintenance or site security
  • Confidence using cleaning products and routine building systems
  • Ability to undertake basic DIY tasks
  • Good organisational skills and a flexible, positive approach
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Clear, routine communication skills
  • Commitment to safeguarding, equality and high standards
  • Reliability, pride in presentation, and a practical mindset

Why Join St Luke's?

  • A warm, supportive and values‑driven school community
  • A leadership team that values professionalism, trust and wellbeing
  • Opportunities for training, development and CPD
  • A role where your work directly impacts children's daily experience
  • A school that takes genuine pride in its environment - and will value the pride you take in it too

Information about the School

St Luke's is at the heart of the village of Tiptree and is easily accessible from the A12 - a short commute from both Colchester and Chelmsford.

St Luke's Church Primary School was founded in 1863 to provide education according to the principles and practices of the Church of England.

Following the reorganisation of many Church of England schools in the 1950's, St Luke's became a controlled school. This means that some of the governing body is drawn from the foundation, representing the Church of England, and the rest is made up of County nominated and other lay people.

The school occupies the site immediately adjacent to St Luke's Church, and this reinforces the feeling of community that we share.

Further information about our school can be found on our website: www.stlukeschool.co.uk

All appointments are subject to safer recruitment requirements to ensure the safeguarding of children and young people. All positions will involve appropriate checks and clearances.
