Required for September 2026 (or April 2026 if available)

NOR: 1060

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, resourceful and committed Head of Science to take responsibility for the strategic leadership of a dedicated, accomplished and friendly team with a keen focus on securing progress for every student. Applications are welcome from highly motivated individuals with a track record of strong classroom practice and evidence of successful leadership.

These are exciting times at Alec Hunter, since our most recent Ofsted inspection confirmed that the school continues to be 'good', with the report noting that "Staff morale is high. They feel valued by (the) leadership team (and)… like many pupils, enjoy being part of Alec Hunter Academy". The Science Curriculum Area currently offers AQA Combined Science and Separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics). Outcomes are improving rapidly, as 65% of students achieved Grade 4 or above in 2 or more Science subjects in 2025. The Science team includes a Deputy Science Lead, Assistant Science Lead and an Associate Assistant Science Lead, with lessons being delivered in a suite of 8 modern, well-equipped laboratories. Moreover, the successful candidate will join a creative and supportive Middle Leadership Group, which plays a key role in driving school improvement.

Alec Hunter Academy is a mixed 11-16 comprehensive school with an established reputation as a welcoming learning community with a positive, harmonious atmosphere and a strong focus on staff wellbeing. As a member of the Saffron Academy Trust, we work in close partnership with a small family of schools in north-west Essex, including Saffron Walden County High, one of the highest performing schools in the county. Numerous opportunities for professional development exist through this partnership and our membership of several local networks. The Trust also offers a benefits package to all employees, covering 24-hour online GP access, free counselling sessions, legal and financial advice and a range of discounted services.

Our school is committed to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment. A Disclosure and Barring Service Check at enhanced level will be required for this post. If you would like to visit the school prior to making an application, please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange this.

All appointments are subject to safer recruitment requirements to ensure the safeguarding of children and young people. All positions will involve appropriate checks and clearances.
