Cleaner - 9hrs per week based in Chelmsford (Term Time Only)
Job Purpose
To maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and order in an education setting by performing routine, deep, and specialised cleaning tasks that ensure safe and appealing environments for employees, pupils and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Routine Cleaning Duties
Dust, clean, and polish furniture, fixtures, and fittings
Vacuum, sweep, and mop floors in offices, corridors, classrooms and public areas
Empty and sanitise bins; dispose of waste according to protocols
Clean and restock washrooms, including toilets, sinks, and hand towel dispensers
Wipe down high-touch surfaces such as door handles, desks, and railings
Clean interior windows and glass partitions, maintaining streak-free clarity
Deep Clean Responsibilities
Perform scheduled deep cleans of carpets and hard floors using extraction and buffing equipment
Conduct high-level dusting of vents, light fixtures, and ledges
Scrub and sanitise grout, tiles, and sanitary fittings in restrooms and kitchens
Potential Ad Hoc Tasks
Assist post-event cleaning
Carry out seasonal or one-off projects such as window deep cleaning or kitchen exhaust cleaning
Identify and report maintenance issues, safety hazards, or supply shortages to management
Follow bespoke cleaning protocols for sensitive environments (medical, food preparation) as required
Equipment and Materials
Cleaners are to operate and maintain a range of equipment, including hoovers, floor polishers, scrubbers, and carpet cleaners. They handle cleaning chemicals safely, adhering to COSHH regulations and manufacturer instructions, and manage stock levels of supplies and PPE.
Health, Safety and Compliance
Cleaners must comply with health and safety policies, risk assessments, manual handling guidelines, and waste disposal procedures. Wearing appropriate PPE, using warning signage, and securing areas after cleaning are mandatory. Knowledge of infection control, safe handling of chemicals, and, where relevant, enhanced DBS clearance are essential for compliance with industry standards.
Person Specification-Criteria
Essential
Minimum 1 year in commercial or industrial cleaning roles
Basic cleaning certification or equivalent
Proficient with cleaning machinery; strong attention to detail; reliable time management
Health & safety, COSHH, manual handling procedures
Dependable, organised, proactive communicator
Legally entitled to work; physically fit; valid UK driving licence
Desirable
Experience in educational or healthcare settings
NVQ Level 2 in Cleaning & Support Services
Knowledge of specialized deep-clean techniques
Infection control and sterilisation protocols
Flexibility for extra shifts

Permanent role, flexible part-time hours after 6pm, 3hrs per day on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday eveing, term time only £13.75 per hour (£5,519.25 per annum pro-rata) Term Time Only
