ACADEMIC MENTOR

Pay Range: Teachers Unqualified Pay Range

Actual Salary from: £21,731 (UQ1)

Start Date: 1st September 2025

Fixed Term Contract until: 31st August 2026

The Role

We are seeking an outstanding individual to work as an Academic Mentor, providing whole-class support, delivering 1:1 and small group interventions, as well as covering lessons.

This post would be suitable for a graduate who is considering teaching as a career and would like to gain some experience and explore working with students in a secondary school setting in advance of that decision being made.

An applicant with TEFL qualifications or interested in achieving these would be helpful.

Some of your key responsibilities will include:

Timetables will be developed around the skillset of the Academic Mentor, but may include the following:

Academic Mentoring

  • Supervise a discreet provision in the school for students who cannot access a full-time provision. The role includes being responsible for coordinating the day-to-day educational provision of the young people in the provision.
  • Work closely with teachers, the EAL coordinator and SENCO to ensure that students are working on timely, structured and cumulative interventions or work supplied by their teachers.

SEND

  • To provide support to students in all curriculum areas across the school or support students with particular learning, behavioural, communication, social, sensory or physical difficulties.

Cover

  • To provide support to students through whole class cover. This will be on a rota through the week up to 5 hours a week.

We're looking for you if you have:

  • Successful recent experience working with children in a learning environment.
  • Graduated (Level 6 and above)
  • GCSE English and Maths grade 4 or above (or equivalent)
  • The ability to exchange verbal information clearly and sensitively with children and adults
  • The ability to use initiative and work without direct supervision, taking responsibility for tasks
  • The ability to apply a range of behaviour management policies and strategies which contribute to a purposeful learning environment
