Job Overview:

The role will support the Chief Operating Officer and provide high-quality financial advice and guidance to Business Managers, Budget Holders, and the Senior Management Team. As a member of the College Management Team, you will provide cross college strategic direction and leadership, with the strategic aims agreed by the Corporation and the Principal.

You will manage and be accountable for the Finance functions and ensure that resources are deployed efficiently and effectively.

Your main purpose will be to oversee the college group budget setting and monitoring, departmental budget, costing activities, and ensure the effective financial management and operations of the college group. Including the preparation of monthly management accounts.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain and implement the cross college strategic plan and play a key part in strategic planning including the finance strategy
  • Leadership and management of the Finance team and function
  • Overall responsibility for the college's finances, ensure financial stability and solvency, legal compliance and manage risk
  • Responsibility for building and maintaining strong relationships with the Governing body and external parties, such as auditors and banks
  • Mentor and develop direct reports to deliver on their objectives supporting the business
  • Manage and promote positive change implementation within the finance department
  • Reviewing and improving processes and procedures in the internal control environment
  • Provision of robust reporting to the Corporation
  • Annual and periodic budgeting and forecasting, with the ability to prepare financial plans, monthly management accounting
  • Prepare financial analysis for contract negotiation
  • Develop and deliver best practice on all financial aspects of the college including ensuring strong financial control and a robust finance infrastructure

Job Requirements:

  • Educated to degree level and ACA/ICAEW/ICAS
  • Minimum of 3 years, ideally within an FE / HE setting

The right candidate will have:

  • Advanced Excel modelling and ERP systems experience
  • Extensive management accounting experience in a finance setting, gained working in a Further Education or similar charity setting
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Negotiation skills and the ability to develop strong stakeholder working relationships both internally and externally
  • A keen eye for detail and desire to probe further into data
  • Adept at applying critical thinking to solve problems
  • Ability to work effectively in a time sensitive environment
  • A strong working knowledge of integrated finance systems
