Job Purpose
To work under the guidance of the SLT's and class teacher to support pupils in accessing learning and achieving their full potential.
The Learning Support Assistant will provide high-quality support to individuals and groups of pupils, promoting inclusion, independence, wellbeing and positive behaviour in accordance with school policies.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting Teaching and Learning:
Work with individual pupils and small groups to support learning activities planned by the teacher.
Adapt learning activities under teacher guidance to meet individual learning needs.
Support pupils in developing literacy, numeracy and communication skills.
Encourage pupils to become independent learners.
Support the use of ICT and assist pupils in using technology to enhance learning.
Prepare and organise learning resources and classroom materials.
Assist with classroom organisation and learning environments.
Supporting Pupils
Build positive and professional relationships with pupils.
Support pupils with SEND including cognition and learning, communication and interaction, social, emotional and mental health (SEMH), and sensory or physical needs.
Assist pupils with personal care where required.
Promote pupils' emotional wellbeing, resilience and self-esteem.
Encourage positive social interaction and inclusion.
Supervise pupils during breaktimes, lunchtimes and educational visits as required.
Support pupils during PE, swimming and other curriculum activities.
Behaviour Support
Promote positive behaviour in accordance with the school's Behaviour Policy.
Use restorative approaches and positive behaviour strategies.
Help pupils remain engaged in learning.
Report significant behaviour concerns to teaching staff.
Assessment and Record Keeping
Observe and monitor pupil progress.
Provide feedback to teachers regarding pupils' learning and wellbeing.
Maintain accurate records where required.
Contribute to reviews of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), One Planning documents or Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Support assessment activities under teacher direction.
Working with Others
Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCO, therapists and other professionals.
Liaise appropriately with parents/carers under the direction of teaching staff.
Participate in meetings relating to pupils where appropriate.
Support whole-school events and activities.
Safeguarding
Promote and safeguard the welfare of all children.
Follow school safeguarding procedures and report concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
Understand responsibilities under Keeping Children Safe in Education.
Health and Safety
Follow all health and safety procedures.
Support pupils in maintaining safe working practices.
Administer first aid if trained and authorised.
Follow moving and handling procedures where appropriate.
Professional Responsibilities
Maintain confidentiality in accordance with GDPR.
Participate in appraisal and professional development.
Attend staff meetings and training.
Undertake mandatory safeguarding training.
Support the school's values and ethos.
Carry out other reasonable duties appropriate to the grade.
Person Specification:
Qualifications
Essential
· GCSE English and Maths (Grade C/4 or above) or equivalent
Desirable
· Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification
Experience
· Essential
Experience of working with SEND children in a school or similar setting
Knowledge & Skills
Essential
· Understanding of child development, Safeguarding, behaviour management strategies
Desirable
· Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice, EHCP's, one planning
