Working Pattern: Monday to Friday,11:30am - 1:30pm

Glenwood School is a thriving community special school supporting learners aged 3 to 19 with complex learning difficulties, including SLD, PMLD and ASD. Many of our learners require high levels of support, which may include personal and health care needs and behaviours that challenge.

We are seeking a positive, enthusiastic and reliable Kitchen Assistant to join our friendly and dedicated catering team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a school environment and takes pride in delivering high-quality food service while contributing to the wellbeing of our pupils.

There may also be opportunities for additional casual hours as a Learning Support Assistant to provide cover when required.

About the Role


Working as part of the school's catering team, you will assist in the preparation, cooking, serving and presentation of meals and refreshments, ensuring high standards of food hygiene, cleanliness and customer service at all times.

You will support the Catering Manager and, in primary settings, may occasionally deputise for them when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation and simple cooking of food and beverages.
  • Serve pupils, staff and visitors from the counter, hatch, trolley or kiosk as required.
  • Maintain food service areas, ensuring counters and tables are clean, tidy and well-stocked during service.
  • Carry out cleaning duties, including equipment, utensils, cutlery, glassware, floors, fixtures and fittings.
  • Maintain high standards of personal hygiene and cleanliness in line with statutory and school requirements.
  • Attend relevant training and meetings as required.
  • Support occasional school events and special functions, which may take place outside normal working hours.
  • Respond professionally to customer feedback and report any concerns to the appropriate person.
  • Report accidents, hazards, damaged equipment, food safety concerns or other irregularities promptly.
  • Comply with all school policies, including health and safety, safeguarding, equality and confidentiality requirements.
  • Participate in performance reviews and identify opportunities for professional development.


Essential Criteria

  • Experience preparing and cooking simple food and beverages.
  • Experience serving customers in a catering environment.
  • Experience carrying out cleaning duties within a kitchen or catering setting.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to use kitchen and cleaning equipment safely.
  • Good organisational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Understanding of the importance of hygiene, health and safety, and food preparation standards.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with both children and adults.
  • Commitment to equality, inclusion and safeguarding.


Desirable Criteria

  • Experience working in a school or educational environment.
  • Understanding of the needs of children and young people with additional learning needs.
  • Knowledge of relevant school procedures and policies.
