Job title SENCO Assistant

Responsible to Manager

Hours Monday to Friday 08:30-15:30

Purpose of the job

Kidz OKPre-schoolis recruiting a newSENCo Assistant to work alongside our vibrant team. We are looking for apre-school practitioner with a big heart who will support and celebrate the uniqueness of each of our children; work well as part of a team and also under their own initiative, is a positive communicator, can inspire thought, and most importantly help to ensure that ourpre-schoolis a fun and safe place for the children to grow and develop.


Main duties

1. To support Kidz OK's SENCO with one to one and specialist small group work

2. To work with small groups of children extending their personal social and emotional skills

3. Working with strategies set by specialist teachers and other outside agencies

4. To help children with developmental delays take part in activities within the room.

5. Support the Kidz OK SENCO with paperwork where appropriate

6. To attend TAF and TAC meetings when appropriate

7. To hold regular meetings with the Setting manager / SENCO

8. To advise the pre-school leader of any concerns over children e.g. over children, parents or the safety of equipment, preserving confidentiality as necessary.

9. To teach children offering the appropriate level of support and stimulation.

10. To supervise lunch club with another staff member.

11. To attend all staff meetings where appropriate

12. To attend in-service training courses and meetings as required.

13. To keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other staff which is acquired as part of the job.

14. To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the pre-school leader in accordance with the pre-schools business plan and objectives.

NB: this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Applicants must be prepared to disclose any convictions they may have and any orders, which have been made against them.

Person specification

Applicants should have experience of working with children in an early years setting and a minimum of NVQ Level 2 in Child Care or equivalent qualification, they must have an understanding of working with children with additional needs and be able to plan a programme and SEND support plan, and have an understanding of the APDR cycle. It would be desirable for the applicant to have an understanding of in the moment planning. This applicant must have Excellent organisational skills, and be able to run a full programme of different plans to cover a variety of needs over the course of the day. This is not a one to one role, it is working with small groups of children with any additional need.


The practitioner will provide inclusive play and learning opportunities for all children attending thepre-schooland to maintain a safe, stimulating and enjoyable environment.

The practitioner will have a comprehensive knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage, hold a Paediatric first Aid Qualification, and have a sound understanding of safeguarding children including the British Values and Prevent Duty. It is desirable they hold the new CERTSY level three qualification.

Essential Criteria

1. Level 2 Qualification in Early Years

2. Paediatric First Aid Qualification

3. A sound understanding of Safeguarding children including the British Values and Prevent Duty.

4. Sound Organisational skills

5. Excellent writing skills

6. Willingness to learn.

7. Commitment to training as and when required.

8. Previous experience of working with young children.

9. Previous experience of working with children in additional needs

10. Commitment to equal opportunities

11. Commitment to young children and families.

12. Friendly flexible approach.

13. Health cleared for the role

Desirable Criteria

1. Level 3 qualification in Early Years.

2. Hold a SENCO qualification
