The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen at The Colne Community School and College for an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated 1:1 Learning Support Assistant (Medical) to join our team and provide 1:1 support for a student with a range of learning, social, communication and medical needs alongside providing intimate care (Cerebral Palsy).

Ideally, the candidate will have experience working with a child with Cerebral Palsy or a medical background that includes providing intimate care. We will provide all the necessary and ongoing training. The successful candidate will be: enthusiastic, positive, flexible and patient. They should be able to successfully work as part of a team, closely with parents and with an open-minded approach to learning.

This post will require the successful candidate to work in partnership with the PNI specialist and SENCO as well as teachers and other LSAs and other support staff, outside agencies e.g. Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists etc.

The main role of this position is to provide support for a named student with an Educational Health Care Plan. The LSA will ensure that this student is fully integrated into all aspects of school life and is making strong progress. Duties will include running specific programmes and activities to assist the student's individual learning and social communication needs. The 1:1 Learning Support Assistant (Medical) will be responsible for implementing the targets on the student's One Plan and EHCP outcomes in liaison with the SENCO.

The successful candidate will undertake regular training to ensure they are competent and have confidence in their ability to support the student on a 1:1 basis, and fulfil the requirements of the "designated trained staff" set out in the student's IHP.

The successful candidate will also be trained in intimate care procedures such as catheterisation and use of specialist equipment, manual handling/hoist training, alongside relevant SEND specific training.

  • This post is 32 hours, 30 minutes per week, 38 weeks per year (term time, plus one inset day)

Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • To support the student in transitioning safely around school during the day.
  • Provide support for a named student with an Educational Health Care Plan. The LSA will ensure that this student is fully integrated into all aspects of school life and is making strong progress.
  • Implement the Individual Health Plan (IHP) as regards the student's cerebral palsy, carrying out catheterisation and intimate care and following guidance for intervention when required.

We're looking for you if you have:

  • Medical experience (previous nursing experience useful or perhaps supporting students with complex medical needs including Cerebral Palsy)
  • Excellent reading and writing skills equivalent to at least NVQ Level 2
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
