Autism Anglia and Doucecroft School, based in Colchester, are seeking a highly motivated Teacher to inspire and encourage pupils to develop their knowledge and confidence, providing a supportive and safe environment for learning. This is an exciting opportunity that would be well suited to a Qualified (QTS) Teacher who is looking to take their next step within their chosen specialism.

  • Location: Doucecroft School, Eight Ash Green, Colchester, CO6 3QL
  • Hours: Full-Time; 35 hours per week (term time only)
  • Salary: Subject to experience, plus SEN allowances


The school:

Doucecroft School is a vibrant, dynamic, and highly supportive specialist co-educational school for children and young people with autism and additional complex needs, aged 3 -19 years. Doucecroft has a "Good" Ofsted rating, where we provide a nurturing environment where students can thrive and grow in independence and self-esteem.

We offer bespoke, individualised education with a proven track record of dramatically raising the outcomes for the students who have completed their education with us. Our approach ensures that through our curriculum and delivery, we focus on delivering quality-of-life outcomes, with specialist therapists and professionals providing expertise in addition to the highly skilled education team.

All staff within the school are committed to striving towards outstanding, led by an enthusiastic and dynamic senior leadership team.

The role:

  • To ensure each student is offered a curriculum relevant to his/her stage of development, age, and ability and in line with the school's curriculum policy.
  • To plan individual student plan for each student within the school's agreed curriculum, working with all areas of the school's multidisciplinary team, to ensure targets are matched.
  • To work with students who present challenging behaviour, participating in restrictive physical intervention training, staff training, and the preparation and implementation of Individual Management Programmes
  • To be responsible for the day-to-day organisation and management of the classroom (which includes the students, the staff, and the physical environment). This will include working with students at lunchtime and supervising break times.
  • To comply with and promote to others, the policies and procedures relating to the school, specifically those relating to child protection, safeguarding, health and safety, security confidentiality, and data protection


Applications are welcome from Teachers with the following:

  • Are currently working at Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Have previously undertaken an Undergraduate degree
  • Offer GCSEs at grade C/Level 4 or above in English, Maths, and Science
  • Previous experience, or Qualification/training in special education
  • Proven Knowledge of S.E.N. and assessment across both P levels and National Curriculum levels
  • Relevant experience working with students with autism or learning disabilities in an educational setting
  • Training in the management of challenging behaviour
  • Experience working with students across the ability range and autistic spectrum is highly advantageous
  • Experience managing a team of learning support assistants would be ideal
  • It is essential that the successful applicant holds a full driving license.

Established in 1977, we are experienced and successful in meeting the needs of students with wide-ranging strengths and needs, providing a nurturing environment where students are able to thrive and grow in independence and self-esteem.

Students can benefit from our flexible boarding provision or can attend school as day students and come from across the Anglia region and the London boroughs.

Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy are provided on-site by our experienced therapy team.

Doucecroft School is part of Autism Anglia, a regional charity working with children, adults and families affected by Autism.
