Beacon Hill Academy in Thurrock is a unique Specialist school which caters for children from 2-19 years with Profound or Severe Learning Difficulties but not those with a primary diagnosis of ASD. The majority of our pupils have associated complex physical and health needs.

We are looking for an enthusiastic speech and language therapy assistant interested in or who has
experience working with children with complex needs. You will be eager in pursuing a career as a
speech and language therapist and will follow the 4 year apprenticeship programme supported by the
University of Essex to study to degree level and qualify as a Speech and Language Therapist. The
apprenticeship programme is due to start October 2022. You will be interviewed at the school for us to
nominate you and then at the University for acceptance on the course.
Training will be funded by the Academy but a condition of this will be that once qualified you remain
with the school for a minimum for 2 years. If you leave before this then the training costs will be
repayable to the Academy.
You will work day to day within the school as a SLT assistant and you will be provided leave to attend the
university for your course and placements. You will be working closely with the current full time
Specialist Support and Therapy Team Lead and Specialist SLTs who will provide support and supervision.
Entry requirements level 2 English and Maths, level 3 qualification.

The post will include:
Providing therapy support and advice around communication and interaction with pupils with skills
ranging from pre-intentional communication to verbal expressive language abilities.
Planning and implementing SLT programmes which include support and advice.
Use of high and low tech alternative and augmentative communication.
Support the implementation of advice around complex eating and drinking needs with appropriate
training
Working closely with colleagues in education and health and with parents/carers.
Providing individual and group sessions.
Contributing to termly outcomes, progress discussions and reports for EHC Reviews.
Providing informal and formal staff training with support from the therapy team.
You will have opportunities to be trained in ELKLAN for complex needs, Signalong and Intensive
Interaction.
