Southend YMCA community school is seeking to appoint a learning support assistant for 30 hours per week ( term time only), to work with small groups of mainly disaffected year 10 and 11 students. The ideal applicant will have experience in a secondary setting and in particular in supporting the GCSE curricula and in preparing students for GCSE examinations. Our Alternative Curriculum is tailored for disaffected KS4 students and comprises Maths, English, ICT, Film Studies, Prince's Trust, PE and Cooking.
The benefits of teaching small groups compensate for the general disaffection of our students who have previously struggled to cope in a mainstream environment. The ability to adapt and to modify and to recognise the needs of the individual is key to helping our students make progress. Resilience and personal strength of conviction are key strengths for LSAs to work and flourish in our challenging environment.
The ideal applicant will be confident at GCSE levels 1-5 particularly in the subjects listed above. However we are particularly keen to strengthen our Maths and PE provision and these subjects may be looked on more favourably if candidates score closely after shortlisting and final interviews.
