Student Welfare Officer

37 hours per week

(actual working hours 8.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Thursday and 8.00am to 3.30pm, Friday)

Term time only

Band 3, Pt Range 17-21 (Actual salary £15,436 - £16,983 per annum)

The King John School in Benfleet is a heavily oversubscribed 11-18 mixed comprehensive of over 2000 students, of which approximately 420 are in the sixth form. The school's reputation in the area is second-to-none and that is because of the achievements of our students and the ethos of the school. Our results are consistently strong and over 76% of our students achieved a standard pass in English and mathematics at GCSE (Grade 4 or above) in 2018 and we are recognised by the Department for Education for our proactive promotion of the English Baccalaureate within our curriculum.

Our A-level results have been exemplary, with over 50% of year 13 students gaining A* - B grades in all of their subjects. We are in the top 15% of the country for A-level outcomes compared to 2817 schools and colleges. The school enjoys an excellent reputation, having received a letter from the Director of Education in September 2017 commending the school on the 'fantastic' results that year.

We require a student welfare officer to work with the SEN Team Leader and Designated Safeguarding Leads to provide social, emotional and educational welfare support to students. The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of student welfare, ensuring effective support for wellbeing and safety.

This varied role will involve working 1:1 or small groups with students, provide counselling/mentoring, working with teaching and learning support staff to ensure student learning and progress is maintained and providing guidance and support for staff, students and parents. You will work closely with the Targetted Services team, counsellors, school nursing team, educational psychologists and other external providers to provide a holistic approach to student support. Attendance at student planning and review meetings with be required as appropriate.

Good ICT and reporting skills are essential as the successful candidate will need to provide regular updates, reports and concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Leads and Targetted Services team. You will be responsible for evaluating support initiatives and re-integration support provided as required.

The successful candidate will need to understand the importance and significance of safeguarding, confidentiality and possess excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.

Counselling/mentoring qualification and experience is required and an understanding of mental health and experience in supporting issues related to mental health.

Previous experience of working within an education sector and an understanding of safeguarding and the referrals process would be an advantage but not essential.
