Routes into Teaching - School Centred Initial Teacher Training in Essex (SCITT)
Graduates wishing to qualify for teaching may consider undertaking their training on a full-time SCITT course. SCITT stands for School-Centred Initial Teacher Training. Groups of primary or secondary schools are accredited by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) to run courses which lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) . In addition training in some SCITTs can also lead to the award of a PGCE (validated by a higher education institution).
The principal advantage of a SCITT course is that it offers full-time ‘hands on’ training in at least two high quality schools, often, wherever possible, close to the trainee’s home. Every trainee has a personal mentor and has exposure to the classroom environment virtually from day one of the course. All aspects of the course including academic assessment, classroom observations, development of subject knowledge, delivery of theory and trainee support will be provided by the SCITT consortium in addition to external examiners and, if necessary, outside lecturers may be brought in to enhance the course provision.
Most Essex SCITT schemes accept applications by direct contact although some use the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR). It is therefore advisable to contact the consortia direct (details below) to confirm admission arrangements and also to confirm their own particular requirements, particularly first-degree contents and subject area. However, bear in mind that the minimum GCSE English and mathematics qualifications (as well as Science for primary entrants) and a degree (or equivalent) will be expected. Some SCITT schemes, however, do offer equivalence tests for those who do not satisfy the GCSE requirements.
