Degree Courses

Teaching Degree Courses are offered by universities that are approved providers of initial teacher training. The universities may offer either a B.ED degree or a BA/ED degree, lasting three or four years. Some universities may offer a shortened B.ED course lasting 2 years. Both types of course combine degree-level study with the attainment of a formal teaching qualification.

Some institutions also have shortened courses, specifically for mature students who can already demonstrate considerable knowledge of their subject.

In either case, you’ll need at least two A levels as well as GCSEs at Grade C or above in English and Maths. Those who wish to enter primary or Key Stage 2/3 training will also need GCSE grade C in Science.

If you don’t have the right qualifications, local colleges may be able to provide courses which enable you to achieve them. Some even offer a special access course, providing you with the necessary combination of subjects.

Kirsty - John Bunyan Junior School Class Teacher

"I've been at this school for 3 years and I'm enjoying every minute of it. My mentor's great, I receive lots of support and I feel I can really concentrate on working with the children.

The high quality of the NQT training programme was one of the main reasons I chose to begin my career in Essex. I'm still using some of the material I received in my first year in my classes now!

I welcomed the extra responsibility I was given as co-ordinator for RE during my third year, along with the teamworking and help from experienced teachers. The staff have been terrific to work with and this has enabled me to gain confidence in all areas of school life."
