Beacon Hill Academy in Thurrock is a unique Specialist school which caters for children from 2-19 years with Profound or Severe Learning Difficulties but not those with a primary diagnosis of ASD. The majority of our pupils have associated complex physical and health needs.
We are looking for an enthusiastic speech and language therapist interested in/or who has experience working with children with complex needs. You will be working closely with the current full time Communication and Sensory Team Leader/Specialist SLT who will provide support and supervision. You will have assistant support.
The post will include:
Providing assessment and advice around communication and interaction with pupils with skills ranging from pre-intentional communication to verbal expressive language abilities.
Devising and implementing SLT programmes which include support and advice.
Use of high and low tech alternative and augmentative communication.
Assessment and advice around complex eating and drinking needs with appropriate training
Working closely with colleagues in education and health, and with parents/carers.
Individual and group sessions.
Contributing to termly outcomes, progress discussions and reports for EHC Reviews.
Providing informal and formal staff training.
You will be encouraged to develop your own skills and take forward your own interests. You will have opportunities to be trained in ELKLAN for complex needs, Signalong and Intensive Interaction.
Post graduate dysphagia competencies are desirable but not essential.
Opportunities for further training in this area will be provided.
