FIXED TERM
Communication Support Worker (with British Sign Language)
01 SEPTEMBER 2022 TO 31 AUGUST 2024
30 hours per week - 43.7 weeks (term time + 1 week Inset days + annual leave)
07:45am -2:15pm daily (with half hour unpaid break)
£20,845 per annum (£15.90 per hour)
We are seeking to appoint an experienced Communicator who has knowledge of and the ability to use British Sign Language to support a new student with a hearing impairment. The postholder will be required to:
- Support the student in and out of lessons using British Sign Language to communicate
- Provide Deaf Awareness training to relevant staff
- Liaise with subject teachers to adapt their planning for lessons and resources e.g. ensure videos have subtitles
- Support the hearing impaired student's learning and wellbeing in lessons and school trips
- Ensure relevant equipment and resources are available as appropriate e.g. audiological equipment, hearing aids, radio aid, passaround microphone
- Scribe during lessons as appropriate
The successful candidate will have:
- Successful experience working with children in a school environment, specifically those with a hearing impairment
- Educated to Level 2 (GCSE) or equivalent qualification /experience
- British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1 & 2 and Level 3 (or willingness to gain Level 3)
- Sound deaf awareness to support student(s) and staff
- Good ICT skills and an ability to learn new technology
- Ability to establish rapport and to maintain respectful and trusting relationships
- The ability to overcome barriers to learning with children by implementing school policies, procedures and identified support mechanisms
- Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills
- A passion to improve learning and work collaboratively with teaching staff to aid the progress of all students and develop their confidence
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and meet deadlines
- A good understanding of Health and Safety, safeguarding and child protection
- A commitment to equality and diversity and inclusion
