FIXED TERM

Communication Support Worker (with British Sign Language)

01 SEPTEMBER 2022 TO 31 AUGUST 2024

30 hours per week - 43.7 weeks (term time + 1 week Inset days + annual leave)

07:45am -2:15pm daily (with half hour unpaid break)

£20,845 per annum (£15.90 per hour)

We are seeking to appoint an experienced Communicator who has knowledge of and the ability to use British Sign Language to support a new student with a hearing impairment. The postholder will be required to:

  • Support the student in and out of lessons using British Sign Language to communicate
  • Provide Deaf Awareness training to relevant staff
  • Liaise with subject teachers to adapt their planning for lessons and resources e.g. ensure videos have subtitles
  • Support the hearing impaired student's learning and wellbeing in lessons and school trips
  • Ensure relevant equipment and resources are available as appropriate e.g. audiological equipment, hearing aids, radio aid, passaround microphone
  • Scribe during lessons as appropriate

The successful candidate will have:

  • Successful experience working with children in a school environment, specifically those with a hearing impairment
  • Educated to Level 2 (GCSE) or equivalent qualification /experience
  • British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1 & 2 and Level 3 (or willingness to gain Level 3)
  • Sound deaf awareness to support student(s) and staff
  • Good ICT skills and an ability to learn new technology
  • Ability to establish rapport and to maintain respectful and trusting relationships
  • The ability to overcome barriers to learning with children by implementing school policies, procedures and identified support mechanisms
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills
  • A passion to improve learning and work collaboratively with teaching staff to aid the progress of all students and develop their confidence
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and meet deadlines
  • A good understanding of Health and Safety, safeguarding and child protection
  • A commitment to equality and diversity and inclusion
