Learning Support Assistant

The Therapeutic Education Department at The St Aubyn Centre for Young People with Mental Health Problems

Band 2 (or Band 3 depending on skills/experience)

Point 3-6 £18,065 - £19,171 pro rata, Term time only 37 hours per week - negotiable

This position requires you to work closely with young people with serious mental health problems on a Psychiatric Intensive Care Ward. You will need to undergo EUPT (NHS Trust) training, Therapeutic and Safe Interventions (TASI). This involves physical restraint of young people. Using the methods taught on the course will be part of your role.

  • The Education team provides a wide range of curriculum options for young people aged 11 -18. Working under the direction of teaching staff, the Learning Support Assistant will support mental health functioning and academic work in the classroom and creative (music, art, drama etc.) and physical activities (gym, trampolining, swimming etc.) both on and off site.

The post involves close daily working relationships with members of the other disciplines at the centre - medical, therapy, nursing, psychology and social work. The post will also include administrative tasks such as inputting data on computer systems.

Experience of working with social, emotional and mental health difficulties and an understanding of child protection procedures is required. Skills beyond the usual classroom requirement e.g. playing the guitar, would also be beneficial.

Driving licence and access to a car preferred.

Information about the School

The St Aubyn Centre Therapeutic Education Department is the specialist education provisions for young people admitted to the NHS adolescent psychiatric unit in Colchester, Essex. We provide education for young people with serious mental health difficulties aged 13 to 18 .

The education department works closely with the nursing, medical and therapeutic teams at the centre to support the young people and enable them to return to the community as quickly as possible. We have strong links with local schools as well as with other community organisations.

All appointments are subject to safer recruitment requirements to ensure the safeguarding of children and young people. All positions will involve appropriate checks and clearances.
