Information about the School

Welcome to Ashingdon Primary Academy and thank you for your interest in our school. Ashingdon village is a small rural community, easily reached from Rochford, Southend, Hockley and Rayleigh.

We have approximately 210 children on roll and provide places for pupils from Reception to Year 6. Pupils join us mainly from the villages of Ashingdon and South Fambridge as well as from parts of Canewdon, Hockley, Rochford and Hullbridge.

We are lucky to be set on a large, attractive site in open, green-belt countryside. The accommodation is made up of 7 well-equipped classrooms, each with their own interactive whiteboard. We also have a library, a large hall and a learning support area for working with small groups of children.

Outside, the academy has a spacious playground, and a large playing field, as well as a very popular Jungle Gym and Trim Trail. On our field we have a large pagoda, where older children are able to eat their packed lunches when the weather is fine. There is a separate Early Years garden, where the Reception children play for their first year at the academy. We also have our very own heated swimming pool.

Curriculum

We aim to develop each and every pupil to their full potential. To do this, we teach a broad and balanced curriculum and use a range of teaching and learning styles in order to make the children's day as interesting, stimulating and challenging as possible.

Our children are taught in mixed-ability classes for the majority of their subjects. At other times, throughout the whole Academy, the children may be taught some specialist subjects by a teacher other than their own (e.g. Music or French). The basic requirements for our curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2 are laid down by the National Curriculum and consists of:

Core Subjects English Maths Science ICT RE Foundation Subjects Geography History Design Technology. Art PE PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) Citizenship

This year we have included French in our KS2 curriculum.

More detailed information for each of these subjects is available on separate pamphlets. We also aim to keep parents updated on any new initiatives which we undertake and to actively involve you in your children's learning in as many ways as possible. For example, in the past we have run workshops to inform parents of how we teach reading in the Foundation Stage, Maths in the whole Academy, and how we assess your child's progress.

The Foundation Stage Curriculum differs slightly and an Early Years Curriculum is taught in the Reception Class. We strive to create a secure and stimulating environment where learning can take place through short periods of structured play and interactive teaching, There are six areas of learning:

Personal, Social, and Emotional development. Communication, Language, and Literacy Development Mathematical Development Knowledge and Understanding of the World. Physical Development Creative Development
