Nursery Manager

Job Description

Responsible to : Great Totham Nursery Committee

Purpose of Role : To provide safe, high quality education and care for preschool children; to promote a solid foundation of good practice for staff, volunteers and parents; to fulfil legal and statutory requirements as detailed in the Early Years Foundation Stage; to ensure smooth operational systems are implemented and maintained and professional relationships are fostered with all concerned parties; to write, contribute to and implement preschool policies; to supervise staff on a day-to-day basis.

Main Duties as Manager :

To ensure that the Nursery meets the legal welfare requirements as set out in the Early Years Foundation stage standards.
To be responsible for drawing up long term, medium term and weekly curriculum plans, including continuous provision, which ensure that each child is working towards Early Years Foundation Stage goals; to monitor the effectiveness of the Nursery curriculum.
To be responsible for providing high quality teaching, ensuring that staff are properly deployed and offer appropriate stimulation and support to the children.
To ensure that outcomes for all children are promoted under the 'Every Child Matters' framework.
To draw up and to supervise the daily programme of Nursery activities and events.
To be responsible for implementing systems of observation and record keeping that ensure children's attainment and progress are effectively and regularly assessed; to monitor the effectiveness of assessment procedures.
To organise the keyworker system and to effectively supervise staff on a daily basis; to be responsible for monitoring the quality of teaching; to participate in staff appraisals and to identify in-service training needs.
To be responsible for ensuring that staff carry out all relevant duties relating to their roles and responsibilities including :
o The planning and organising of activities which reflect observations, assessments and record keeping outcomes and implements anti discriminatory practice

o The maintenance of objective records which identify children's individual need, abilities and progress and use these as a focus for children's review meetings.

To support staff in managing children's behaviour, implementing the Safeguarding Children policy.
To manage all administrative tasks relating to the service e.g. fees, petty cash, lunch money, equipment, inventory and reports to the Committee.
To work as part of a team, and make time available on a regular basis to discuss the day to day running and planning of the Nursery.
To be responsible for the creation and implementation of all Nursery policies and procedures and to ensure that all staff are kept fully informed and updated it any future development.
To work in partnership with the Committee and staff to update and review policies and procedure in line with the Nursery self-evaluation and action plan.
To ensure that all records are properly maintained e.g. daily attendance register, accident and incident book, risk assessment.
To liaise closely with parents/carers informing them about the Nursery and its curriculum, exchanging information about children's progress and encouraging parental involvement.
To respect the confidentiality of all parents / carers / children / staff / committee with regard to personal information (except in the case of child abuse, misconduct by staff or action that could place the Nursery in disrepute).
To ensure equal access to the Nursery service regardless of ethnicity, gender, culture, disability or lifestyle in accordance with our Valuing Diversity and Promoting Equality policy.
To ensure that the Nursery is a safe environment for children, staff and others, that equipment is safe, standards of hygiene are high, safety procedures are implemented at all times and fire drills are regularly practiced.
To liaise with the Deputy Manager, Committee, staff and outside agencies as necessary to ensure that all legal and statutory requirements are implemented; to provide reports as requested.
To attend in service training and meetings as required.
To ensure that the Nursery works in partnership with all local childcare providers.
To promote and manage the effective recruitment and induction of new staff; to ensure that candidates have the appropriate skills, qualifications, experience and qualities.
To provide effective leadership and management of the Nursery staff; to undertake regular staff performance reviews, team meetings and staff supervision.
To identify the development and training needs of the staff.
To ensure that the complaints procedure is implemented in a positive manner and that the staff are supported in the process.
To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the Committee in accordance with the Nursery aims and objectives.
